“Without suffering, there is no compassion.”
-Nicholas Sparks
- What does this quote mean to you? Have you ever thought about it before?
Lets pretend we live in a world where every person has a full glass of water that always re-fills itself. Nobody has ever experienced thirst in their whole lives because the water is always right in front of them. Now, say one person (person A) ran out of water. Person A is now experiencing extreme thirst and needs help, but is surrounded by people who don’t know what that person is feeling. Therefore, do not feel the need to help them out. Eventually, Person A is suffering alone with people who don’t understand and feel no empathy for them. A few days later another person (person B) looses their water. As person B looses their water, Person A has found resources to fill his water glass, and has relieved their thirst. Person A sees Person B thirsty and helpless, and realizes that they know the feeling. Person A, knowing thirst and need, fills Person B’s cup, attempting to ease the suffering with compassion and empathy.
